pot pie! remember it, from the winter? well here’s a summer one full of cherry tomatoes and fresh corn.

IMG_5383

i was super stoked to use a ton of stuff from our garden that was all FINALLLY READY. like these beautiful carrots! check it!

IMG_5336

and i’ve got to say, cooking with your own garlic just makes everything better. this garlic turned out great, huge cloves really good taste, insane for roasting.

IMG_5283

THE PIE makes 2 big pies (9 inch)

i used this dough recipe for the crust again because it’s my fav. i know it says to roll it out and chill it, but i didn’t and it was just fine. i mean, you shouldn’t roll it out and leave it sitting out warm for a long time but if you make your filling, roll it out and assemble then no problemo. also i used all whole wheat and it was great.

oil

1 red onion, diced

3 carrots, sliced

3 ears of corn

a pint cherry tomatoes

10 nugget potatoes, cut small

4 tbsp dill, chopped

4 cloves garlic, minced

1 cup spinach, chopped

1 1/2 cups of WHATEVER GRAVY YOU LIKE. here’s one. here’s another.

sautee onion in a big pan. cut the kernels off of your corn and add that and cook for 5 minutes. next add the carrots and potatoes. cook for a couple minutes then add tomatoes, garlic and spinach. cook until spinach wilts. add your gravy and dill and simmer for 10 minutes. assemble your pies! eat em!

PDX EATX II / DAY 5

our last day! it’s really a half day but we ate a lot for the time we had.

we got up early and biked down to Sweet Pea for another coffee newspaper chill out and split a bagel.  after that we had to pack up! we took our bikes so we had to be able to carry everything.

here’s all the records…

IMG_5216

…and mark’s bag once they were all packed up.

IMG_5244

we hauled our bags to Hungry Tiger and had breakfast. the proper brunch menu is still much smaller than it used to be but it was good. we ordered enough food for 3 people, as our Hungry Tiger Too history demands.

We got a scramble with olives and spinach and things, a different scramble with sausage and things, AND an order of biscuits and gravy. here’s mark being excited for the before.

IMG_5252

and me being dead for the after. i will admit i tapped out part way through this breakfast and mark ate the rest.

IMG_5251

then we were off to the burrito place to get some road food. we realized that we forget soyrizo and other perishables in the fridge at the hostel so i sat with all our bags and mark biked back and grabbed everything then we were on the train back to canada. SEE YOU AGAIN SOON PDX.

day four!

all the food! still at in our lovely hostel room. there’s a rooftop garden just outside the window beside our bed. CHECK IT OUT. pretty cool.

IMG_5200

so we went on a bike adventure to Vita for some breakfast treats. We went half half on a breakfast burrito full of veg and tofu and a biscuits n gravy deal with tempeh and sausage. again the taters were top notch. i usually get this breakfast burrito, and I’ll admit that this time it wasn’t as good but it was still GOOD. the biscuits and gravy there were also super good.

IMG_5202

then off to mississippi records to buy more things (especially if you’re mark). i got a thing and it’s rad and then i spent the rest of the time loving on this dog! every store should have a resident dog.

IMG_5205

We walked to Little Axe to look at more records and once we were finally hungry again we went to the Bye and Bye for lunch and drinks. It’s run (i think) by the same people as the Sweet Hereafter and the menus have a very similar feel. I got the Bye and Bye which is a litre jar almost entirely full of booze with some juice and sugar things. it is crazy and delicious. I also ordered a meatball sub (fantastic). i forgot to sub out my chips for collards and i regretted it. if you go, get the collards or brussel sprouts.

mark went for the brocco tofu bowl just to make me look excessive. here is me in my foodbooze glory.

IMG_5212

the bowl!

IMG_5210

the sub!

IMG_5209

needless to say i had a nap afterwards. that drink does not mess around.

then for dinner we had fancy eats at Portobello. It was delicious as always, though their portions seem to have shrunk. unfortunately, there is such lowlighting in that place that all the photos i took look like garbage and don’t do justice to how good the food looked.

so here is a photo THAT I DID NOT TAKE AND HAVE NO RIGHTS TO. it’s the beet tartar, which is on a cashew cheese and it’s stupid good. it’s so good. it’s insanely good. get it. eat it. then we had a eggplant roulade type thing. it was good and quite rich, but as i said, smaller than i’m used to there. i still recommend it for fancy times though!

IMG_2919

then we went to our room and watched Amy Schumer stand-up on the ipad and mark looked at all his records one by one.

DAY 3!

we finsihed our time at the air bnb and moved to the hostel. We lucked into getting the Family Room, so it was big enough for 4 people BUT THERE WERE ONLY TWO OF US. pretty swank.

IMG_5184

then we headed to Paradox, the first place I ever ate in Portland and one of my fav breakfast places.  We had a benedict style thing with veggies and delicious hollandaise on sourdough. if there’s one thing i can say across the board, it’s the portland knows how to make hashbrowns. everywhere. no gross hashbrowns anywhere ever. crunchy, well spiced, delicious.

IMG_5176

then we got biscuits and gravy with sauteed mushrooms and veg and such. they have an almond gravy and it’s soo tasty. that sauce on the side it’s Secret Aardvark hot sauce, which we brought back with us and, seemingly, is out at every restaurant.

IMG_5178

unlike my past PDX posts, i only have 2 meals a day to tell you about. usually there are less meals than places I want to eat in a trip, so i have to cram it in and eat like crazy. this trip was longer so we just ate enormous meals, walked around, had coffee, had beers, then had another meal. the end.

after a trip to Powell’s and who knows how many record stores, we went to the DesChutes brewery and had some tasty brews.

IMG_5190

Once there was enough room in our tum tums, we went to Los Gorditos. It’s not all vegan, but they have separate meat, vegetarian and vegan menus. they have all the good vegan trash meats: soycurls, soyrizo or tofu. if you can’t eat soy, i wouldn’t bother going here. but if you can, DO IT. it’s good and fast and there’s a salsa bar.

We split something called a Garbage Burrito (it has everything in it) and an Empanadas Rellenas plate. we ended up going back on our last day right before we left to get a burrito for the train ride home.

IMG_5187

a peak inside the garbage burrito…

IMG_5189

Then we went to the movies, had more beer and went to a show. biked back across the bridge and put our bellies to sleep.

DAY TWO

we got up early and tried to go to hungry tiger only to discover they weren’t open yet, so we went to Sweet Pea Bakery to get some coffees and treats and read a newspaper.

We went halfsies on a plain croissant and a chocolate croissant. here is the fullsies end result:

IMG_5133

not the croissantiest vegan croissant I’ve ever had but really delicious. nice crust, it was sort of halfway between croissant and brioche. We ended up popping into Sweet Pea for coffees and a chillout a few times (i later had a bagel with “bacun scallion” cream cheese).

SOOOOOOO then we went to Hungry Tiger Too only to discover that they have overhauled their menu. It is much smaller and most of the brunch stuff is for weekends ONLY now. so we decided to save it for the weekend and went to find suitable brunch treats.

we headed to Hawthorne and found Harlow, an (apparently) new place related to Prasad downtown. tons of vegan options. it was TASTY. very straight up, it tasted exactly like I had hoped when reading the menu, really good, clean, flavourful food. Nothing fancy but well-done.

I got a Huevos Rancheros sort of deal with tempeh in lieu of eggs. The highlight: cashew jalapeno cream.

IMG_5138

Marky had a scramble bowl thing with tempeh, kale, veg and beans on brown rice. It was super tastytimes.

IMG_5139

Here’s Mark being happy about eating delicious things. Next top, Exiled. The first in a half dozen record stores we’d be visiting.

IMG_5136

There’s a bar beside Exiled where we stopped to get a tasty brew, because even the shittiest bars have delicious microbrew on tap for no money. We carved some sappy weird shit in the table there last year, and whaddayaknow, it was still there.

IMG_5153

We had some brews, went and stoked up at Food Fight, looked around some non-food related things and then eventually had dinner. SizzlePie! Pizza, caesar salad and some more cheap beer.

IMG_5163

later in the night went to hang out and have some more beers and go to a show. by the end of the night we were both pretty sauced and in need of some weird oil in our bellies so we biked around until we saw something that fit the ticket.

I can’t tell you where it was, but we got onion rings and tater tots and they were disgustingly delicious. here’s some incredible blurry drunk photo of half eaten tots!
